Autumn in Sweden is one of the most beautiful times of the year! The days start getting short and dark, and the cold weather sets in, but nature is set ablaze with amazing fall colours. From the beginning of October to the middle of November, autumn really sets in and it’s the perfect time to explore a few new places! Spending the autumn exploring is definitely one for your Sweden bucket list! So, to help out, here are the most beautiful places to visit in autumn in Sweden!
Alingsås
Alingsås is one of the most beautiful places to see autumn in Sweden. Just 30 minutes outside of Gothenburg, this town is known as “the home of fika” due to its many cosy cafes that sell home-baked Swedish fika! Make sure to visit Nolby Gård for a sweet treat and a coffee if you have the chance!
During the fall season, many of the shops and cafes in Alingsås are open later and the town holds the Lights in Alingsås festival! This is a light show that takes place around the whole town, with installations lighting up the streets and parks. The festival is usually held during the whole fall season in Sweden. The 2022 festival is from the 30th of September to the 6th of November.
If you are searching for fall colours during your trip to Sweden, make sure to visit the beautiful Nolhaga Park. Strolling around here feels like a scene out of The Notebook, the rich forest lighting up different tones of orange. Make sure to check out the colony lot nearby (Nolhaga Lantgård) as it is full of luscious red apples at this time of year! It’s all very picturesque.
Gränna
Gränna, the home of the candy cane, is one of the most beautiful places to visit in autumn in Sweden. The town is small but very leafy, and walking to Grännaberget you can see an orange fall landscape leading out to the Vättern, Sweden’s second-largest lake. Spend the day here wandering around the town, popping in and out of shops and tasting their candy cane! For a cosy walk in the forest, and the best place to see Sweden’s fall colours, head down to the town of Röttle. Here you can walk a short look around the forest, meadows and a waterfall.
Another great day trip from Gränna is heading over to the islands of Visingsö. This is a very popular island in the summer and autumn, with old castle ruins and a beautiful landscape to explore. In September every year, they hold the Visingsö Harvest Festival. During the weekend, the island opens up and farms and creators across the island invite you to taste their harvest, buy their products and explore the history of the island. It’s definitely a fun and very Swedish autumn experience! You can hire bicycles from the small shop near the harbour which is one of the best ways to explore!

Kullaberg Naturreservat
Kullaberg Naturreservat is a unique piece of landscape located on the West coast of Skåne, southern Sweden. Not only does Kullaberg have some amazing coastal views, with rocky outcrops where you can often see porpoise, but also lots of forest land that turns orange in the fall. There are many walking tracks here that pass viewpoints over the coastline and it makes for a great autumn day trip to see the fall colours, or a short weekend away!
Make sure to walk down to Nimis, the famous treehouse sculpture built out of driftwood by Lars Vilks. This sculpture is on the northern side of Kullaberg Nature Reserve and to get there you have to follow the path down from the car park.
On the way back, make sure to take a stop off at the small town of Mölle. This is very much a Swedish summer town, however, in the autumn where there are far fewer crowds – it is just as lovely to explore!

Liseberg
Liseberg is an amusement park in Gothenburg, and known to have one of the best Halloween displays in Sweden! If you are looking for a fun place to visit in the autumn in Sweden, then this is definitely the place for you! Here, you can really see the fall colours as they decorate the whole park with pumpkins and scary figures! They have so many great haunted houses here which are open specifically for the Halloween season, and you might even find yourself having a bit of a scare when it gets dark.

Tividen National Park
Tividen National Park is located just north of the Vättern lake and is one of the most beautiful places to see more natural fall colours during the autumn in Sweden! The National Park is quite big with a lot of different walking tracks. The best place to start is by parking at the visitors centre and following one of the paths there.
A trip to Tividen is the perfect chance to try another fun Swedish fall activity – mushroom picking! This forest is great for chanterelles and other Swedish favourites! If you haven’t been mushroom picking before or want to know a little more about foraging in Sweden, you can read my beginners guide to foraging here!
Söderåsens National Park
Söderåsen’s National Park is one of the most beautiful places in Sweden in the autumn. It is a true dream as the entire landscape turns shades of red and orange. It is such a fall feeling hiking here, stopping for a fika, looking over the ridge onto layers of fall colours. Söderåsen’s National Park makes for a great day trip and fall camping trip in Southern Sweden! There are lots of different paths to walk, viewpoints to explore, and camping spots available!
If you park at the carpark by Naturrum you will find the start of most hikes. Here, there is also a map and a small museum where you can learn about the animals and plants that are special in this area of Sweden.
Trädgårdsföreningen in Gothenburg
This is one of my favourite places to watch the seasons change in Gothenburg! Although it’s not your traditional fall leaf-watching destination, the variety of plants brings such beautiful colours and it really is a special place to explore! It is the perfect place for a city picnic, or a short walk on your way to grab a pumpkin spiced late or fika with a friend. and there are so many beautiful little alcoves to explore.

Skördesfest at Tjolöholm’s Slott
Tjolöholm’s Slott is one of the prettiest houses in west Sweden. It is located in Northern Halland, out in the countryside with amazing views over the water. In the fall, they hold a Skördesfest/ Autumn Harvest Market. This is a lovely way to experience the traditional side of autumn in Sweden, buying fresh fruit and vegetables, taking horse rides and listening to live music!
Tjolöholm’s Slott also has an incredible Christmas market which is worth a visit if you are in Gothenburg or southern Sweden in December!
Just down the road from Tjolöholm’s Slott is Mariebergs gårdsbutik. This is a farm shop where they sell all sorts of vegetables all year round. In the autumn, they have a lovely selection of pumpkins and a field where you can pick your own flowers! It’s always worth a stop here on your way to or from Tjolöholm in the autumn.
Autumn in Sweden | An overview of the fall colours
Autumn in Sweden is a truly unforgettable time of year. There are so many beautiful places to see the fall colours, and so many fun Swedish traditions to enjoy! If I could recommend any of the above places, it would definitely be Söderåsen’s, National Park. Our trip here was truly magical, spending the night in the tent and waking up surrounded by falling orange leaves.
